STRATFORD.

■r comi! ""ilcit[on3, letters, etc., left with Ur H. J. Hopkias, kookseUer, will recilrs promjrt mention.] (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Dec. h . One of the Midhirst Dairy Company's employees, R Spray, is an inmate of the Stratford Hospital through injuries received whilst working at the factory. The fingers of the left hand were badly crushed and torn through having heen jambed in a cheese press. The mishap will prevent him working for a few weeks. The Midhirst sehoylbov Ewan Rutledge, made a splendid recovery with the broken thigh sustained some weeks ago. The treatment received at New Plymouth effected a wonderful improvement, and the lad is now home again. After being here a few weeks as acting manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Mr. 0. A. Smith is returning to his former quarters in New Plymouth. During his short stay here Mr. Smith made a host of friends by his genial yet businesslike methods. Mr. W. C. Christie, of Hawera, will succeed him as acting-manager. Evidently the slip on the Main Trunk line, the epidemic, or something else ha 3 upset the Railway Department. At Stratford, long lines of empty trucks travel south daily, but if they return north again they certainly bring no coal, and householders and others are receiving a lesson in economy. Luckily it is summer time.

Commencing on Thursday, 12th inst., C. E. James will open his Christmas sale. What with peace celebrations, epidemics, etc., one finds it hard to believe that the feslive season is so near.. We r.eed to brighten up, and this desirable quality will be available to the public by inspecting the closelv-paeked shelves of toys for the babies, trinkets for the schoolgirl, jewellery, handbags, etc., for the ladies. For the boys Mr. James has all descriptions of games, inodors and outdoors, and for father all the best brands of tobacco and cigars, cigarettes and pipes. All welcome to inspect, the premises.—Advt.
