A correspondent •writes interestingly in the Wellington Post as follows: It lias occurred to be that a time like ~ the present tlj,o following anecdote may be of interest Jto some. of your readers., ! It is taken from an old History of Franco written by Emile de Boimeehose and published Paris in 1848. The following is an absolutely literal translation of a paragraph appearing pn page, 63: "The following 1 year; (1705), led by!' Peterborough. biVe "or 'the most remark- " aible and singular men whom Great Britain lias: produced,' tiie English disembarked in Catalonia, and in concert with the Prince of Darmstadt attacked Barcelona. The capitulation 6f this place was marked by an unheard-of circumstance. Whilst the Governor was negotiating at the gates with' Peterborough, the cry was raised in tho town, 'You are betraying us, and whilst wo are negotiating your English are butchering the pei>ple in the Square!' 'No,' replied Peterborough, 'it can only be the Germans of the Prince of Darmstadt. Let me enter with my Englishmen, and I will come back and resume the negotiations.' Peterborough's tone of truth persuaded the Governor. The latter opened the gates, the English hunted out the Germans, and Peterborough, master of the town, came out again and resumed the negotiations."
