ASHBURTON SPEAKS

At' the annual meeting to-day the County Council passed a resolution; That this council expresses its strong opinion that the delegates from this Dominion at the Peace Conference urge that the Central Powers be made to defray the expenditure which the Dominion Government has now incurred, and the council hopes the delegates will insist upon the German colonies in the Pacific not being handed over to their former possessors.

The Dominion butter and cheese committee received a. cable from London this morning stating that the sale of the Dominion butter and cheese output to the Imperial authorities has been completed. The prices are: Cheese, 10|d, and butter 181s. This completes the deal which was held up for some months. The usual formal ratification by the Treasury is expected immediately.

A COWARDLY ASSAULT.

Wellington, Last Night

Three men —Casey, McDonald and Denham—got three months without the op.tion for assaulting Constable Hunt, who had only just returned to duty after an attack of influenza. The magistrate denounced these "cowardly and brutal assaults", and refused to inflidt a mere line.
