Sir Charles Lucas presided when Sir ,E. I. Thurn's paper on the Pacific Islands was read at the Royal Society. He said hepersonally never doubted that the islands would be allowed to revert to Germany, and wondered why Australia and New Zealand worried on the point. There was a lot of wrong-headed thinkiug that it would be selfish to-keep what ihad been taken, but he was egotistical enough to think that the natives thrived best under British rule. Sir Im Thurn favored for a time that the islands remain under Colonial rule. Lord Denham said all were agreed bliey wanted no German Islands in the : Pacific. Out of common gratitude for the sacrifices made, Australia should getthe New Guinea and adjacent islands. !New Zealand would receive Samoa and Japan would keep the islands north of ithe equator. He condemned the inter- ! nationalising of the islands. The co»- ! dominium had), not proved! a good system of governing natives. | A FOCH PROFESSORSHIP. ' London,.
