INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
• IMPROVED OUTLOOK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. j Auckland, Last Night. There was a flfty-per-cent. decrease in the number of applications for aid today, and, allowing for the disturbing influence of the celebrations, this indicates an impi-ovement. Applications are made for more temporary hospitals to be in use where serious cases can be centralised, thus economising the time of doctors and nurses. Still, many families are in dire distress, and more workers are needed. DEATH ON A COLLIER. Nelson, Last Night. The Union Company's collier Kakapo, which left Auckland on Sunday, and was off Westport on Wednesday, being unable to enter, reached Nelson thig afternoon with seven of the crew suffering from influenza. A. W. Duncan, second officer, died at 1 o'clock this morning. The chief officer, chief steward, three firemen and two sailors were admitted to hospital. The vessel leaves for Wellington to-night.
