A New York cablegram reports iha death of Mrs. Kussell Sage, a lady of phenomenal wealth.' Captain W. Waller, harbormaster at New Plymouth, is now nearing recovery from a severe attack of influenza, which has confined him to his bed for nearly a .fortnight. Mrs. E. W. West, Fitzroy, has re-i ceived advice that her son,,, Tom West, was admitted to the 47th' Stationary Hospital, Gaza, on October 26, with malarial fever. Mr S. Rund!.' has received word that his son (Trooper L. J. Rundle') has been discharged from the 27th General Hospital and transferred to the Af tea Convalescent Home on October Mtli.' Private J. Wylie, advice of whose death was received on Saturday, was a prominent and popular member of the New Plymouth Association Football Club, and before joining the Expeditionary Force was employed by Messrs. Webster Bros. Mr<». D. M. Thompson has received j word that her husband, Sergt. D. M. | Thompson, has been admitted to hospital, France, and has had his left leg amputated, October 11; also that her brother, Private P. B. Butler, has been wounded in the left foot and been admitted to hospital in France, October 24. After 'having eerved in four Pijlar Expeditions—twice with Scott and twice with Shackleton—Alfred Cheetham, of Hull, has lost his life at sea through enemy submarine action (states our London correspondent.) Cheetham had made voyages in the Terra Nova, Nimrod and Endurance. He. wore the Polar Medal 1914-16 and was awarded the, clasp at the beginning of this year. On the return of the Endurance party to England in the middle of 1917, Cheetham joined up as an A.B. in a mine' sweeper. One of his sons lost .Jus life two years ago, through the torpedoing of his vessel.
A pleasant little gathering of the combined staffs of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy. and the agents from Eltham, Waverley, Patea, Manaia and Opunake took place in Hawera on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of wishing good-bye to Mr F. W. Carey, the local manager, who has been promoted to manager of the Wellington office, and also of extending a welcome to his successor, Mr C. Maopherson. Valedictory speeches were given by Mr G. Cooper (Elt'ham), representing the agents; Mr W. 0. Williams, the outside staff; and Mr C. Shanahan, the office staff: Regret was expressed at Mr Carey's departure, and good wishes voiced for his future prosperity and happiness.' Mr Carey- was presented by Mr. Cooper, on behalf of the staffs, with a suitable gift as an ewession of the goodwill which existed between the staff and himself. Mr Carey has proceeded to Wellington. Mr. S. Percy Smith has resigned his seat on the Pukekura Park Board, a position he has held for 15 years, during part of which time he has been chairman. In forwarding his resignation, Mr. Smith stated that in his 79th year he was oblio-edj: to' curtail his activities very undertake to complete the supervision of the work in, connection with the •new lake. He expressed his thanks for the courtesy he had always received. On the motion of the chairman and Mr. Hughes it was resolved to accept the resignation with much regret, and to place' on Tecord the board's appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him during the fifteen years of his membership, especially for the supervision of various improvements, such as the extension of the upper lake. The board also gladly accepted his offer to superintend the improvements to the upper lake.
