SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OP HAWERA BRANCH. A meeting of the Hawera .branch of Hie above Association was held m the Hawera Council Chambers on Saturday. Mr J, IS. Murdoch occupied the chair, and delegates wore present' from Okai;iwa, T e Roti, Ohangai, and Hawera. •The mam business was Che consideration of circulars from the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Manawatu School Committees' Association. After lengthy discussion tho following motion was carriSl:— "That the Hawera branch Of the 'Parana ki School Committees' Association are in sympathy with the proposal that the Government bring in the necessary reforms m order to improve the Education system of the Dominion (D . By making the teaching profession attractive so that the salaries shall be increased and surroundings improved; (2) by making the school buildings t'iioroughly up-to-date so as'to relieve the present unsatisfactory state of overcrowding; and further by any other moans that are required to make the education system thoroughly efficient in every respect." The question of appealing for teachers called up for military service was brought before the meeting, delegates mentioning cases where it appeared as if the Education Board wore favorln" certain districts in their appeals. The following motion was carried: '•That this meeting views with disfavor the action of t'ho Board in discriminating in their appeals for teachers, and expresses the opinion that owing to the scarcity of suitable teachers all Second Division men should be appealed for." The selecting"of a delegate from Hawera to the deputation to wait on tho Prime Minister was left in the hands of Messrs J. B. Murdoch and R. Star.
