BOWLING.

WEST END CLUB OPEN THE SEASON Although weather conditions yesterday afternoon were not altogether what bowlers iiad hoped for—there was keenness iu the air—the attendance, nevertheless at the West Eud Club's enclosure was very good, and included quite a fair sprinkling of members from sister clubs; in fuct seven rinks were in full play from the "rolling of the jack." After the singing of che National Anthem—bowlers are noted for their loyalty and patriotism—the president (Mr. J. D. Sole) declared the green opened for the season, hold out the hearty hand of fellowship to visitors, welcomed the gathering of members, and trusted that the play that day as well as the play during the season would prove as pleasant as it had been in former years. Their pastime was purely one of recreation and pleasure, and that probably was why the game of bowls entered so largely into the pastimes of the community. Mr. W. F. Brooking (president of New Plymouth Club) returned bowlers' greetings, as also did Mr. F. H. Jackson (Fiteroy) aud Mr. H. Benton (Vogeltownj. During the afternoon Mr. A. A, • Thompson (secretary) handed the championship shield to Mr. J. D. Sole, the latter having been successful in the leading event of last season. Mr. L. H. Honey field was also the recipient of a medal for the win in the junior championship. The green was in first-cla33 order, notwithstanding late rains, and reflected credit on the caretaker .(Mr. R. Sole). The same remark might well be applied to the second green, '". j, during the past twelve months, jj ft is looking in tip-top condition, tha sward having come on quite up to the moat sanguine expectations. Dainty refreshments were handed round by members'* wives and lady friends of the club during the progress of the usual opening-of-the-season game (President v.'Vice-presi-dent), which resulted m a win for the Vice-president's team by 192 to 125. STRATFORD CLUB. _ The threatening a-apect of the weather this morning made it -very doubtful whether it would be possible to hold the official opening of the bowling season in tho afternoon; but prospects' improved, and by 11 o'clock it was decided to hold tho function, which proved very successful.
