HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
g ANNUAL SPORTS DAfcf j : The Annual sports of tho New Plymouth Girls'' High School were held at the school grounds yesterday. The weather was not all that could have been desired from a spectator's point of view, a keen wind, accompanied by several showers of rain during the morning, blowing across the grounds. Notwithstanding, there was a very good gathering of friends and visitors. The sports were entered into with zest and complete goodwill by the girls, and the number of entries received for the various event* showed the interest taken by the girls in this branch of their school life. The heats in several events were run off at the school prior to the sports day, in order to bring the compass of yesterday's programme within a reasonable time. This was successfully done, and the sports were got off iii a manner thoroughly satisfactory to the visitors and contestants. Miss Borrow acted as starter, and to her must be given much of the creJii for the expeditious dispatch of the various events. The records weie kept by Misses Fairbrother and Clark, and Messrs. R. W. D. Robertson and E. P. Webster assisted with the judging. Afternoon tea was served in the asserabh ball, and was controlled by the Misses Drew, Lenuon and Smith, with the assistance of a number of the school student?. The proceeds from the tea, which amounted to £B, will be devoted to the Dr. Barnardo Homes fund. Some further contributions were received through the medium of Miss Kitty Wood's bulldog, which was decorated with a Union Jack, and had strapped to his back a collecting-box, into which a good many coins were put during the day. In the sports events themselves some very creditable records were put up. The hurdle races and high-jumping evoked a lot of interest, the senior section of the latter being a particularly good event. Miss T. Burwell (the winner) succeeded ih reaching the 3ft lUiti. mark, and was accorded very hearty applause for what was a splendid performance of consistent jumping. Miss. M. Brunette, who is a very clean and clever little jumper, also put up an excellent performance. It would he an advantage to the girls in this class if they could adopt a sports costume which freed them from the disadvantage of their skirt, many of the girls clearing the bar splendidly in what was really neat jumping, but their skirts pulling'the bar off the pegs. The championship events were keenly contested, the results being as follows. — Senior championship: T. Burwell (in points) 1; M. Brunette (11 points) 2. Junior championship: W.
