WAVERLEY-WATTOTARA. ANNUAL MEETING. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Fine weather favored the WaverlcyWaitotara Racing Club for the annual race meeting yesterday, and a record gathering of sporting folk rolled up at, the conveniently-situated course at Waverley. Splendid racing was witnessed, and winners were 'fairly easily picked by followers of form. The Waveriey Cup wa.~ a great race, a length separating the first four horses. White Blaze, which won last year, made a great attempt to land the stake, but wan not quite seasoned enough to. stall off F_"drus over the last fifty yards. The Brewer Handicap was. aifo well contested, Starengo winning by a narrow margin from Hushman and Movement. The latter might have, won but for her ! saddle slipping, but there could be no excuse for the failures of Hydrus in the opening event; also into the Cup, in which White Blaze bored out and bumped Henry Clay. The running of Hydrus was accepted as correct, but N. McDonnell (White Blaze) was cautioned to be more careful in future, though the stewards quite recognised that the grey gelding had a tendency to run out .in: the straight. '' '', .' : .".. .:' I !J: A bad accident marred the hurdle Moko falling and bringing down the favorite (Golden Grafton), and Castle'wood. Moko had to be destroyed after the race. The Wahganui Garrison' Band supplied excellent music, and the. catering was capably managed by Dustin, Ltd, Mr, T. Nixon (Wanganui) ran the booth, and appeared to do a record business. Mr. Tom Cameron was in good form at the barrier, and Mr. J. R. L. Stanford's decisions were given with their usual correctness and precision. The tote handled £25,740, as against £22,275 last year. Results: ■• .-■ BREWER HANDICAP (open); 180 sovs; second 25 sovs and third 15 sovs from stake; six furlongs, 3 W 7 Brown's b g Starengo, by Marengo—Star Queen, aged, 7.11 (B. Starengo and Hushman were the first to show out, followed by Royal Chef, Hyginas, Hupana and Movement, with Hydrus last. , Starengo, and Hushman were still in front at the turn, and Movement was coming fast.
