SALVATION ARMY'S SELF-DENTAL ' EFFORT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Commissioner Hodder stated at a. meeting to-night that the Salvation Army's self-denial effort had established a. record, totalling £50,001 15s 3d, exceeding last year's total by over £II,OOO. Details are as follows: Auckland division, £0974; Christchurch, £6476; Wellington, £5305; Central (North), £21,285; Dunedin, £6500.' The total of the Red Jersey Fund, which has just been closed, is £102,285 7s ad, as follows: Auckland division, £35,015; Christchurch, £8700; Central (North), £30,888; Dunedin, £14,658; Wellington, £12,713. PROTECTION OF SOLDIERS' BUSINESSES. Wellington, Last Night. Regulations were gazetted on August 27 providing for the protection of soldiers' businesses during' the absence of the men on active service.* The Minister of Defence stated to-day that under these regulations arrangements have been made for the management of a good many soldiers' businesses, but the number of soldiers' property boards of trustees appointed under the direction of the National Efficiency Board was not large. He hoped to see the scheme expand in usefulness. The Minister mentioned that there was a need. He had in his mind the papers concerning one case in which a soldier's business had been protected, and he wished to make public some of the details in order to encourage other men who might be sent into camp to make arrangements for the conduct of their business. The man in question had been a gentleman's outfitter and retail boot salesman. . The Efficiency (Board had made arrangements with another outfitter to allow his assistant to take charge of the soldier's business under the direction of the board of trufSees. WAR. TOLL ON NEW ZEALANDERS Wellington, Last Night An official return shows the total number of deaths of members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to October 14 as 15,051, comprising 689 officers and 14,362 men.
