BAND CARNIVAL.

The committee having "in hand the question of trophies and special prizes for the various competitive sections at the Band Carnival have been very successful in their canvass. Competitors in the decorated motor-car will be interested to learn that Mr. Newton King is donating a motor clock, valued at £2 10s, as a first prize. For the farmers' decorated car, Mr. A. Smith, of the Criterion Garage, is giving a case of benzine. Messrs Spcdding and Staiiiton are giving a motor-cycle tyre, of the value of £3 las, as first prize in the motorcycle obstacle race, while the sepond prize is Mr. Whale's motor-tube There is sure to be keen competition for the tilting at the ring on motor-bikea, as the first prize is a case of benzine given by Mr. Allen, the second being a motortube, donated by Mr. Newton King. The Chinese lanterns are now ready for distribution to those intending to take part in the fancy dress competition (with masks). These are fitted with the necessary candle and a nice long rod for carrying along the street in the procession. The lanterns are being sold at a distinctly low figure (on behalf of the band) by Messrs A. S. Brooker, at the "8.K."; C C. Ward, draper, and Petty Eros.—viz., (Id, 9d, and Is, according to size. It is hoped, therefore, that all those desiring to assist in udding o lie spectacular effect of the procession on Monday night willl make a point of securing one of these lanterns before Saturday night if possible.

Donations of refreshments for the ladies' committee stalls will be welcome, and may be delivered personally to Mrs. Burgess, who is the head of this department, or at the new bandroom, by 0 a.m. on Monday (Labor Day), or at the stalls in the park, as early as permissible that day-

Competitors in the fancy dress section on Monday night are rure.nded that the first prize lady, and the gentleman securing that position, will each receive a cheque for one gisinea; while the second prize-takers will leceive 10s 6d each. The attractions throughout tiie day at the band carnhal promise to be well worth seeing. The school children will be to the fore in various exhibitions in squads, supplied by Fitzroy and Central schools. The High School boys will be seen in drill exercises, which is always a feature with these boys. The morning procession, given fine weather, should be of a comprehensive character, judging by reports. In fact, talking of reports, there are all kinds of rumors of several surprises, the promoters of which are ''keeping it dark."
