Arde;i, licensee of the Empire Hotel, against Captain Hawkins, in connection with statements made by the latter during the course of his temperance address delivered in the Town Hall a few nicnUs back. It is understood that counsel from Wellington will dei.-ndfthe lecturer.
Other charges appeal ing 'in the list are breaches of the Licensing Act preferred against a licensee, whilst another ease is one brought against a man oi leckless driving and alsi being drunk whilst in charge of a car. There is a {risibility oi some oi the charges being adjourned The settlers on the Bird Road filled the sehoolhouse on Tuesday evening, when a farewell was tendered to MrGeorge Sanue. A wrist'..-;: watch waa the gift, Mr. George Crowe wishing the recipient all good luck in his journey to the trenches and back apam home. He also mentioned that their guest had previously en ,: sted, and on t-ia second attempt had succeeded in fulfilling the military requirements. A fine programme was submitted iy Miss Phillips, Mr. J. H. Thompson. Mr Peter Aitken, and Mr J. S. Rowe, who supplied the comic element. Mr- C. H. Fox was accompanist, and also supplied the music for the dance, extras being contributed by Miss Scott and Messrs J H. Thompson and A. Coleman.
Midhirst Hall was crowded last evening, the occasion being a welcome heme to Private W. Hughes and a farewell to Private Stephenson. Mr. G. P. Harhness, chairman, presented Private Hughes with an illuminated welcome home address, and to his comrade a shaving outfit, remarking '.lnt Corporal Stephenson's father had been lo the trenches and done his share, and now they were farewolling his son. He was sorry that Private Hugr.es had been wounded, hut hoped it wouii not be long before the climats of Taranaki helped him to recover his usual health Eoth soldiers were very brief in their ■replies. A number of songs, etc., were contributed by well-known amateurs, whilst Mr J. M. Shotter as M.C- made the most of all opportunities to see that the dancers enjoyed themselves. Before leaving with the last draft of
soldiers here, Messrs ■/ H Russell and M. J. Foley (N-Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.'s employees) were presented with wristlet watches by their comrades. The manager, Mr. W. A.Hewitt, voiced the regret of al! at the necessity 01 having to leave under the circumstances, but wished them both the best
0' good luck and a safe return. Despite the wet weather of Tuesday afternoon, the monthly meeting of the Women's National Reserve proved very enjoyable, and the attendance very satisfactory. Vocal items, etc., wera contributed by Mrs. Y Crawshaw, Messrs Stone and Robs'jri and Mr. C. H.
Fox. BOWLING. Owing to the heavy ram of Tuesdav and the unpromising appearance on Wednesday, the official opening of the season by the Stratford Bowling Club \esterday was postponed. The afternoon, however, was fine and quite a. number of club players and visitors visited the green and had an afternoon's play.
T. LAMASON T- S WEEKLY REPORT. Last Saturday I held my usual weekly sale. There was a fair entry of produce, poultry, etc. I quote: Hens 2s Gd to 4s 9d, ducks 2s 7d to 4s !)d, roosters 2s Cd to 4s Cd; rhubarb Gd to Bd per bundle, cauliflowers 4s to 6s per dozen, potatoes as to 10s per bag. A quantity of boots and furniture was sold at usual auction rates.
