VALUELESS CHEQUES. ! E y Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Oct. Hi. A novel scheme adopted bv a young educated Maori, Haata Matenga, of raising money was revealed at court when he pleaded guilty to ten charges of obtaining money by means of valueless Cheques amounting to £73 10s. Tradesmen at Wanganui, Marton, and Stratford had been victimised. At one time accused liad a small banking account at Waipukurau, and, before commencing operations, lie faked the pass book to represent a large sum to his credit. The book was produced when the cheques vere issued, to support the suggestion that accused was a man of means. Mr. Wyvern Wilson sentenced him to twelve months reformative detention.
UNLICENSED ALIEN SENTENCED. Dunedin, Oct. 10. Eugene Seigle, a young German, was charged with being an unlicensed alien. He was engaged on work on a steamer. He was sentenced to three months. Stevenson and Cook, for employing him, were fined £lB.
