NATIVES' CLAIM TO LAKES. • By Telegraph. —Press Association. Rotorusi, Last Night. The claim of the Arawa tribe for the ownership of lakes was opened before Judge Wilson at the Native Land Court. Mr. F. Earl appeared for tlic claimants, and Mr. J. E. Prendcvillc for the Crown. Counsel agreed to take the case of lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti as a test case. Mr. Earl addressed the Court, claiming that the lands round the lakes and the lakes themselves were in the undisputed possession of the Natives till recent years, when the Government, having bought parts of the lands, charged the Natives for fishing licenses. Mr. Earl's address is expected to continue through to-morrow.
ANOTHER TRAMWAY DISPUTE. Christehurch, Last Night. The tramway employees unanimously resolved to request from the Tramway "Board increases of pay equal to those recently conceded by the Wellington City Council. The men's decision has been communicated to the board, with a request for a reply in time for consideration at a further meeting of the union to be held at midnight on Saturday. The board, 1 unvever, is unlikely to deal with the matter before its regular meeting on Monday. The 'men make no mention to the lionrd of what their alternative is, or what will happend if there is no reply to place before Saturday's meeting, nor would the union's secretarv make any statement beyond this: '"Wo are not threatening the board, but simply making a request for what we. .consider our duw."
