BAPTIST CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. "Wellington, Last Night. The conference of the Baptist Union I elected the following officers: —President, Mr- M. P. Laselles (Timaru); vice-pre-sident, Rev. H. Hercus; secretary, Rev. R. S. Gray; financial secretary, Rev. Alfred North; treasurer, Mr. Lambourne. EMBARGO ON DEALING IN WOOL. Wellington, Last Night. Regulations are gazetted which forbid the sale and purchase of New Zealand wool, except (a) any wool which is or has been the property of the grower; (b) anv sale of wool t» the Crown; (c) any purchase, sale, agreement, or offer to which the Controller of the Department of Imperial Government Supplies has given his precedent consent in writing, on being satisfied that the wool to which (he purchase, sale, agreement, or offer relates is not required for the üße of his Majesty. WAR LOANS AND TAXATION. Auckland, Oct. i-!. Reviewing the financial situation and the position as regards further war loans Sir Joseph Ward stated t'liat, in the ordinary course,' it ,-vould be necessary for New Zealand to obtain more money to tcarry on her sliare in the war. Assuming that the war ended in 18 months from now it was certain that the heavy taxation we were undergoing at present would he greatly increased. He had 110 doubt as to the capacity of the Motherland and the Dominions to carry tlheir new obligations until these were extinguished in years to come, without seriously affecting or impeding the progress of the Empire as a whole. . CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. Hamilton, Oct. 14. Martin Kiddle, a young men. has been | charged with manslaughter and remanded 011 bail. It is alleged that he was the -driver of a motor ear whidh knocked down Adam Fort a fortnight ago, the result being that Fort died. ANOTHER MAIL BAG THEFT. Auckland, Monday. Another case of interference with mail bags in Auckland was reported oil Thursday. When a number of mail bags, which had been left on the railway station in a post office truck, were being cheeked from the truck into the guard's van of the train, it was discovered that one bag was missing. The bag contained goods mailed by an Auckland soft goods firm to the Ohura. On Friday morning Mie mail bag was found in a paddock at Remuera, some of the contents being missing. DEATH OF A MURDERER, Auckland, Monday. Toeta Tai Nuku. the Raratongan, who was detained in a mental hospital in connection with murder and attempted murder, died to-day.
