/ i 111 i ■ ' 'f (From Our Own Correspondent,) [Alt communications, letters, etc., »;ft with Ur 51. J. Hopkius, bookseller, will receive rromiit sUcutits.] Stratford, Oct. 1;>. Beside tlu! Male Lhoir singers, a small but sele- t band of assistants M ill contribute items at the concert to-uiorrow (Thursday). Miss Phillips is a young vocalist making her initial bow to a Stratford audience, while Miss Vera Rowe is one of Stratford's most capable elocutionists. The popular favorite Mr. Norman Day will contribute some of the latest ballads, and Mr. A. 0. Sturrock will contribute pianoforte numbers. Fo.vs weli-known string band will provide the mir-ic for the dance, a guarantee that this will be of the best. The Returned Soldiers' Association has formed a branch here, and now, to make their comrades feel more at home and comfortable, are on the look-out for a meeting and rest room and offices. They are only following the lead of New Plymouth and Hawera men, and probably will have no difficulty in securing suitable premises. A ladies' committee will be set up, thus securing their co-opera-tion in any social function.

Many who read these lines will regret to learn that Arthur Burrell, 'a member of the Main Body and <a machine-gunner, has been killed -in the recent lighting in France. The sympathy of all who knew the soldier will go to the bereaved parents in their hour of sorrow. Information was also received to-day that Private A. Moore has been admitted to a hospital, suffering from the effects of a gas attac.c by the enemy on October 0. It is to be hoped that he will soon be able to leave the institution.

Another Stratford soldier obliged to seek relief in the Brockenhurst Hospital is Private E. P. Kelleher, who, after being in France, has been invalided to England, suffering from trench fever. The initial sale of tallow, hides and skins held at Stratford to-day by the Farmers' Co-op. Organisation Society proved most succ-e.-sful, the attendance of buyers being very satisfactory, and prices well up to ruling values. For calfskins the bidding came up to the highest prevailing, and gave an indication of the slate of the market, Naturally there was a little inconvenience incidental to a first sale, but apart from this the Farmers' Co-op. Society has every reason to be well satisfied with the results. Excepting the rather cramped space, the sale was conducted with expedition. The Copper Trail (country) now stands :t over ,€2400. Saturday is the final day of the appeal, and it is sanguinely anticipated that £3OOO will be raised in town and district.

There was a heavy storm, fortunatc'lv of short duration, at Stratford at mid-day. Accompanying the rain were hailstones of considerable size, lightning and thiiiider. Several shops found the water coming in and giving a lot of trouble. „Jthaui the storm was also severe while it lasted.

The wise man is he who endeavors to ( please the ladies. There is one way of doing this, with the purchase of a handsome bracelet, a pretty necklace or a watch. If you desire to please the lady make your purchase at C. E. James's, the warehouse of a thousand bargains.— Advt.
