WESTERN FRONT.
HUN FRIGHTFULNESS. TOWNS AND VILLAGES DEVASTATED. . WITH VIEW TO DESTROYING FRENCH PROSPERITY. Received Oct. 14, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 13. The French headquarters correspondent, writing on Saturday afternoon, soys the Germans continue their rapid retreat along the whole of the Champagne front. For sixty miles the horizon is a sea of smolce and flames, and every town and village for miles behind the enemy's lines is burning. The meaning of this is that if the terms are acceptable to Germany as now offered, France will recover her invaded territories, because that cannot be prevented, but they will be deserts littered with dead cities.
The British headquarters correspondent says that everywhere on the line of retreat fires light the horizon. The enemy is concentrating his efforts upon destroying all places of commercial value and ihousehold effects. The German', mean to ruin the prospects of future prosperity. They apparently still believe that frightfulness will stimulate anxiety and lead to the granting of an armistice.—Reuter.
