The Stanley Road settlers last night gave a farewell social to Private W. McCracken, and the attendance of the public was extremely good, the schoolroom being crowded. Mr. Wellintgon complimented the soldier on his second trip to the trenches, and voiced the wishes of all that he would be enabled to return in due course sound in health and limb. In presenting their guest with a ca c e of pipes, he trusted the recipient would be enabled to enjoy many pleasant hours, and that the time would l>o short before he would smoke the pipe of peace. A very fine musical programme was arranged, s-ongs, etc., being contributed bv Misses Sangster. Anderson, P.rothcrton, and Messrs Anderson and P Aitl.cn. The dance music was supplied by Miss Huse. The Midhirst folk intend eiving a welcome home in Private v 7 Hughes and a farewell to Corporal Stephenson in the loe.il hall i;c:ii. week. Those who donated ♦rophies for the waltzing and other compelitions in eon- j portion with the Fire Brigade's plain and fanev dress hall were the Mayor, Siiperintend"nt Crubb, Lieutenant Davey M'"l Foreman A Mooon. On Thursday and Friday the Ngaere r, eople held a sale of work in aid of the County Copper Trail. Mesdames A. Walker and J. Thomas supervised the details. Mis=es Walker and Jones were in charge of the sweets stall. Mesdames Coleman and Kofoed in needlework, etc.. made by the Ladies' Patriotic Committee; bran tub. Miss Haijh- shooting gallery, 0.
