STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communlcnlions, letters, etc., left with ilr 11. J. Huykuis, bookseller, will receive proiuul tt'.eutioii.j FIRE BRIGADE BALL. Stratford, Oct. 11. Those responsible for the holding of the plain and fancy dress ball at the town 'hall on Thursday evening have every reason to.feel gratified with the result, financially and otherwise. The stage had received particular attention, and in a conspicuous part of same was the hose-reel, hydrants, and other paraphernalia necessary for fire-fighting. The supper room was converted into a fairy bower, Mrs/Moon and her assistants displaying an artistic taste that surprised and pleased jll. The floor was in excellent order, the dancers having the time of their lives. Competition for the various prizes was keen, Miss Masters, as a ''Maori Maid," annexing first honors for Indies, with Misses Sage ("Romeo") and Loydon ("Allies") next in order of merit. Mr. D. Yetton, "Cowboy," won the men's competition, J. Reesbv, "Triumph Cheese,'' gaining second honors. Considerable interc.->t was taken in the waltzing competition, the winners being Miss Gardiner (Manaia) and Judd (Matapu), the Stratford couple, Miss Wade and D. McMuilian, being second. The music was Supplied by Mr. Fox's orchestra, comprising Messrs V. Lester, C. Penn, ana D. McAllister (violins), J. McAllister (double bass), C. Fox (piano), H. Burmester (cornet), T. Wilson (trombone), and B. Vinsen (drums). As M.sC., Lieut. Davev and Firemen Burgess and Henry luoked after the interests of all. In the past t'be brigade has held many fine gatherings, but last evening's function must be voted the most enjoyable ot the series.

GENERAL. Messrs J. McCluggage and C. D. Sole, J.sP.. were engaged for !)0 minutes at the courthouse tlrs morning hearing charges of assault, etc., preferred against four Swiss farmers. Werder, Schickel', Myers, and Chamberlain. Mr. Stanford appeared for livers, and Mr. Coleman for Werder. After hearing the evidence, the information against Chamberlain was withdrawn, and fines of £5 cac ; l> were inflicted upon Werder and Myers, and £lO upon Schickel - . The affray was a rather serious one, Werder having to receive medical attention. A first offender was convicted and discharged. Stratford's railway platform was crowded with relatives and others who 'iad as?enibled to farewell the Stratford draft-of the 47th Reinforcements. The Town Dand, under conductor L. Spurdle, and piper Joe Wade gave items that were appreciated. Appropriate farewell addresses were made by t'iie Mayor and Rev. E. B. Tinslev. At the conclusion dicers were given for the new soldiers of the Kin;,', who were presented with hold-alls by the Ladies' Patriotic Committee. Those entrainitng this morning Mere:—Stratford: C. E. At the residence of Mr. Kerrisk, MidI'irst, on Tuesday, the friends of "Private W. R. McCracken tendered 'liim a farewell evening and presented him with a gold ring as a memento of his association with the district. The evening was pleasantly passed. Stratford folk will be pleased to learn that the New Plymouth Choir of 00 voices will appear at the town hall on Thursday evening, when tfye entertainment will be in aid of the town Copper Trail. Low prices are being charged, and already considerable interest is being shown. A dance will follow the entertainment.
