THE HARBOR PROPOSALS.
TOKO APPROVAL Mr. W. H. Were presided at tlie meeting of Toko ratepayers held in the Coronation Ilall on Thursday afternoon, when Messrs Newton King (i:hairinan) and J. MwCluggage, of the New Plymouth Harbor Board, detailed fully the contemplated improvements in the harbor scheme. By the aid of the map, he explained how the work was to be con-' ducted 1u sections. 'His speech, and also that of Mr. MeCluggage, was on grounds familiar to Daily News' readers. In reply to Mr. J. Lueena (Huinga), Mr. King stated that Nos. 1 and 2 areas counted together, and No 3 separately. The latter was really half of the whole rating area. In reply to another query, he stated li-at Waitara people were satisfied that Moturoa must be the deep-sea port. YTaitara and Opunake botli had harbor rating districts, but he was sure there v.iii no jealousy. The New Plymouth I'onnl did not go into the Hawera district. To Mr. West, the speaker gave an outline of the value of the endowments. Regarding the rate, ho believed if this were, raised, there would be no need of a rnte. Auckland and Wellington were quoted as port* that hiul benefited largely hv endowments- He also showed how certain goods could be placed on the market, at a cheaper rate if landed at the breakwater. Mr. Mnrfell said he was pleased to 1 Mr. King's remarks. To him the pns-t'on of the Harbor Board was similar to that of a man on the land who had run out He had to do something or get nut.
