WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) October S. Amongst those who recently passed tlie qualifying test for entrance to the Royal Flying School in England were H. Hine, of Tikorangi, and W. T. Luxton, Waitara. A soldiers' farewell social was held last night in the Clifton Hall, there being a fair attendance, when the Mayor made the usual presentations to the men going away. The Mayor also, on behalf of the members of the Borough Council and staff, presented Mr. Fear with a fountain pen, the recipient suitably replying. Mr. L. Andrews lias obtained a month's leave, and will go into camp with the next draft. The school swimming baths are expected to be completed shortly, and the committee have arranged for the pur chase of the old golf pavilion, which will be removed from the recreation ground, and re-erected for the purpose Of providing dressing accommodation.

From letters that have been received here and which were written on board the fated transport prior to he epidemic occurring, it is quite evident that a| rangements were not as they should have been. i Some excitement was eaused in West Quay yesterday by the sight of two wellknown characters coming to grips. The older of the two appeared to have well got the "strangles hold'' when they were parted by one of the onlookers.
