TARANAKI BY-ELECTION.

THE CAMP VOTERS' QUESTION,

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 8. The official explanation ol the po3i--1 tion regarding Taranaki vomers in camp is that legislation provides against the , payment of travelling expense* for voters, and it would be a breach of the law to issue travelling warrants There is no power to establish a polling booth in camp. This was provided for at the election of 1914, but doe? not cover a by-election. Apparently, nobody thought of issuing absent voters' permits in time, which would have got over the difficulty., . At Oaltura last night Mr. J. S. Connett, the National Government candidate, had an "excellent meeting, there being about forty electors present, Mr. G. A. Adlam presiding. The candidate's address was followed with marked attention, and at the conclusion he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence. Mr. S. G. Smith addressed the electors on Tuesday evening at Fiteroy Hall, Mr. Wyatt presiding over a large "audience. The candidate was well received, and a hearty vote of thanks and ■ confidence was carried without dissent. The Bell Block Sail address by Mr. Smith was well attended. Mr. B. Simpson presided, and a very attentive hearing was accorded the speaker. Questions were asked and answered, and at the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks for his able address and also ft vote of confidence was carried, with only one . dissentient. At Tataraimaka, Mr. Smith', owing* to two heavy engagements last night, was unaWo to attend personally, but was represented by his chairman and, committee. A most successful meeting eventuated, at which 35 electors were-in attendance, and, after an address by the chairman, a resolution of thanks and confidence in Mr. Smith was carried wifcU acclamation.
