lieutenant Leslie King, of the London Regiment, late of Greymouth, has been killed in action. A London cable announces the death of Mr. Robert Ross, the art critic, and at one time assistant editor of The Author. Corporal M. J. Armstrong arrived by the mail train at New Plymouth last night on a week's sick leave, he having suffered an injury to one of his ankles, but is now progressing favorably. Mr. E. J. Barry, Mayor of Ohakune,. has decided to contest the Waimarino seat at the next general election. The ■ constituency will come under the amend- • ed electoral boundaries. Lieutenant W. J. R. Hill, whose name was included in the list of officers awarded the Military Cross, died of -wounds oh September 5. He was an old Mew Plymouth boy, being a son of Mr. Sam. • In the last liat of awards for services in the field appears the name of Major F. K. Turnbull, formerly of New Plymouth and Hawera, who has won the * D.S.O. Many friends will be pleased to see this recognition of Ms good work.. He -went out with the Main Body, and has been twice ■wounded. Very general .regret will ba felt that Rev. C. A. Mallett is reported to have died of burns, accidentally received. Mr. Mallett .-was formerly traveller for Messrs J. H. Cock and Co., but left to study for the church. Having taken jholy orders he returned to New Zealand and took up work in the Auckland diocese, subsequently joining the Expeditionary Force as a chaplain'.' News -was received yesterday of the j death at Featherston Military Camp of Private James Purdie, of Fitzroy. Deceased was for many years a well known and highly esteemed farmer of Waitaia Road, and relinquished farming a short time ago in readiness to answer his country's call. Deep sympathy will be felt for his bereaved widow and relatives. Messrs D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.' (choir : man), D. McLaren, and Grace, members of the No. l Wellington Military Service Board arrived in New Plymouth by toe mail train last night. They wero accompanied by Mr. Walshe, secretary to the board, and Captain Orr-WaJker, military representative. Mr. Grace is acting \ on the board temporarily during tie I absence of Mr. Guy Williams owing to indisposition. The board will open its New Plymouth sittings to-day. Bombardier ■ Sidney Waters (late of the sub-editorial staff of the Chriitchurch Press), who 16ft with the 23rd Reinforcements and has been serving in France for the last year, and Lieutenant J. Byrne (formerly of the Otago Daily Times and the Evening Post), of the Wth Battery, N.Z.F.A., are to be associated in the preparation' of the official history of the artillery branch! of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. They will be stationed for some time'in London, where they will have accesß to the official records and other necessary material.
Sergeant Frank Green, M.M., came; down from Auckland by the boat and reached Fltham yesterday morning on the mail train. Several of the returned soldier's friends were present to meet him and gave! him a hearty welcome' home. Sergeant Green left in the Amy ' Service Corps with the Main Body, but>. J later, secured transfer to the fighting ranks, in which he rapidly gained promotion and the Military Medal previous to going to the front Sergeant feeen was fanning in the Ngaere district, >uii was also at one time in business at Eltham.—Argus.
Canon Mayne, M.A., of Napier, the new . f Dean of Waiapu, was educated At Hatfield Hall University, Durham: He was . ordained priest in 1894. For two years he was assistant curate of St. Cuthbcrt's Wells, during the same period being classical master at Wells Cathedral School. From 1893 till 1895 he was an assistant master at Christ's College, after which he was curate at All Wellington, England, and later at 6t. John's, Boslyn., In 1900 he was appointed a canon of St. Paul's, Dunedin, and in 1906 of St. John's Pro-Cathedral, Napier.
