ENEMY RETIREMENTS.
CAMBRAI WILL SOON BE ABANDONED. Received Oct- 7, 9.53 p.m London, Oct. 0. The Germans retired yesterday for two miles on a. seven-mile front, south of Cambrai, owing to the capture of Mont Brehain and Beaurevoir It l» expected the enemy will aoon abandon Cambrai. Another retirement is proceeding in the salient in the Rheims area, the enemy taking up positions 10 miles in front of Rheims. There are indications that the enemy is preparing for a further retirement between Lens and Arras, possibly to the Senses Canal, and perhaps as far as the Jff&utedeule Canal.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc.
AERIAL ACTIVITY. HARASSING THE ENEMY. Received Oct. 7, 8.53 p.m. London, Oct. fl. The Press Bureau states that Royal Air Force and Navy contingents cooperated in the Belgium offensive, and dropped 72 tons of bombs on enemy railway communications and dumps. They hit several trains, and caused explosions of important dumps. They fired railway buildings and inflicted numerous casualties among tbe reinforcements and transports. We destroyed 25 aeroplanes and dropped seven others untontrollable. Ten British machines are missing.
Sir Douglas Haig reports (8:50 p.m.): VV* improved our positions slightly in local engagements south-east and northward of Aubencheul aux Bois, to northwards of the Scarpe. We obtained possession of Fresnoy and established ourselves in the eastern outskirts.
Despite the cloudy and unsettled weather, our aeroplanes dropped 22 J tons of bombs. We downed 2 Oenemy machines Nine British machines are missing.
