STUBBORN FIGHTING.
• AUSTRALIANS SEVERELY COUNTER-ATTACKED. London, Oct. 6. Sir Douglas Haig reports: There was Btubborn fighting all day at Montbrehain and Beaurevoir. Having captured the former early in the morning with 500 prisoners, the Australians were selverelv counter-attacked. The enemy | throughout the remainder of the day repeatedly attempted with his reserves to regain the village, but all the attempts were repulsed and the enemy suffered heavy losses the British tanks doing great execution. The village remains in our possesion. The possession of Beaurevoir was fiereelv disputed and remained long [ doubtful. The enemy.' strongly reinforced. spared no effort to retain the village. After making progress in the daytime by hard fighting, the English in the evening reattached and carried the village, establishing their line firmly eastward and north-eastward. North of Beaurevoir we took possession of Aubencheul-aux-Bois and established ourselveß on the high ground northwards towards Lesdines.
