WESTERN FRONT.

FURTHER BRITiSH CAPTURES. IMPORTANT TRENCH ADVANCE. SUCCESSFUL ITALIAN OPERATIONS. Received Oct. 7, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. G. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We captured and held Mont Brehain and Beaufevoir, despite severe counter-attacks. A French communique states: The pursuit -was continued all night long on the whole of the Suippe front. . On the left our troops, after crossing the Aisne canal region, reached Sapigneull in the neighborhood of Agulcourt. Further eastward wo are approaching Aumenancourt le Petit. The massif of Nogent La Bassee is in our possession, and our troops have passed considerably beyond it. We are progressing on the general line northward of Pomade, northward of Lavannes, and northward of Epoye. On the right we occupy the village off Pont Faverger, on the Suippe. On the Ames our advanced troops reached a wooded crest northward of the river. Several hundreds were taken prisoners yesterday and during the night.

Southward of the Ailette the Italian troops operating in the region of Ostel and Soupir, after previously capturing the important points d'appui of Lacourt, Soupirdesoup, and part of this village yesterday, engaged^in severe fighting on the plateaux to the north-east. They carried by assault the stubbornly held trenches on the height of La Croixeinste and the Metz farm.

Northwartl of St. Quentin fighting continued with the same bitterness in the region of Lesdines. We made fresh advances eastward of that locality.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
