BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
NEW PLYMOUTH AUXILIARY. For many years there was in New Plymouth an auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, but it has ceased to exist, and the agent, the Rev. F. H. Spencer, accompanied by his colleague, the Rev. A. T. Thompson, is visiting New Plymouth for the purpose of reconstituting the auxiliary. On Sunday sermons will be preached in the Presbyterian and Methodist churches by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, and the Rev. F. H. Spencer will preach at Waitara. On Monday at noon a luncheon will be given to business men at Findlay's rooms for the purpose of reconstituting the auxiliary. The importance of the matter will be seen by those who study the subject to bo supreme; the art of reading has been greatly extended, and is going ahead with ever-increasing momentum, and education without the knowledge of God and the sincere practice of the principles of religion as defined by the Bible is full of peril, so that the Christian public must see to it that the spreading the Bible is abreast of the demand which this war has created. Over nine million copies of the Scriptures, mostly New Testaments, in over 75 languages, have been circulated amongst combatants alone, and in addition over 30,000,000 more in about 515 languages have been circulated in the world since the war opened.
