THE LIQUOR QUESTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Monday. At the Hawkes Bay Diocesan Synod on Saturday, the following resolution was carried, unanimously: That this synod believes that the times call for new and strong measures dealing with the liquor question, and therefore commends to all churchmen in the diocese the recommendation of the National Efficiency Board as worthy of tlieii whole hearted support. SAILORS WAR RISKS. Wellington, Monday. Owners of small coastal steamers have asked the Government if they are liable under the Imperial compensation scheme for crews. The Minister oi Marine has cabled the authorities in England on the matter. TREATMENT OF CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. Wellington, Monday. A report has been received by t'be Minister of Defence on the result of the inquiry into the allegations made about'the treatment of conscientious objectors in the Wanganui detention barracks, but it is awaiting perusal by the Commandant, who is indisposed. TRAMWAYS BREAKDOWN AT WANGANUI
Wanganui, Oct. 1. A serious breakdown occurred in the t tramway system last night through a bad accident to the main engine, which had been heavily overloaded during the whole war period through the Home authorities' refusal to find shipping space for the new power plant ordered oyer four years ago. The auxiliary engine will maintain a curtailed service during meal hours only. Great inconvenience and loss of business will result, to say nothing of the. serious shortage of tramways revenue, unless the situation is soon restored.
The council set up an independent commission to inquire into the accidentThe tramway staff is strenuously workins to ensure a better service. The council also tvired Mr. Myers, asking him to appeal to the Imperial Ministry of Munitions urging that the shipping of plant be ordered.
GAZETTE NOTICES. Wellington, Last Night. Reflations have been gazetted declaring that after October 1, save in pur. suance of license issued by the Minister of Marine, it jSliall not be lawful for a mate or engineer on any Home trade ship to be engaged or continue to be engaged as harbormaster, or in any other official position in the employment of a harbor board.
A notice has been gazetted that regulations providing for the isflie of distinctive badges to officers and crews employed on transports or other vessels chartered by or under the control of the New Zealand Government f .r any purposes in connection with the present war has been revoked.
