DUDLEY ROAD.

There was a crowded congregation At the Dudley Road Schoolroom last Thursday evening, when the settlers turned out en masse to participate in the memorial service in memory of the late Norman Egar and Joe Hodge 3, two young fellows reared in the district, who laid down their lives for the emancipation of the whole world- The Bev F. TTarvl" (Inglewood) conducted the service, which was an impressive one. fit ting references being made by the preacher to the loss the district had sustained through the demise of these young fellows, who were admired and honored by all.

LEPPEKTON. ' (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening last, those interested in the well-being of tiie local hall had a sight out. The proceedings took the form of a basket social, and over 20 baskets were ably auctioned by Mr. Cudbv ; of YVaitara, at prices ranging from 6s to 14s. During the evening songs were given by Miss L Jeffrey and Mr. 11. Giddy. Altogether an enjoyable evening was spent, and a sum of over fl2 raised for the benefit of the liall funds. Tiiis may be considered very satisfactory, as, owing to inclement weather, the function had been postponed from an eaVlier date. 1 understand that Gunner Walter Hellier, who was wounded some time ago in France, is being invalided home. Preparations are well in hand for the big patrotie day to be held in October in the I.epporton Hall. The men's committee are scouring the district for gifts of pigs, poultry, etc., for the butcher's stall, which will be undei- the same capable management n= last rear —viz., Messrs Cloke and Stimpson. The ladies of the district are running various stalls, for which gifts are also toeing solicited. Several competitions are being arranged, and it is hoped to secure the services of an orchestra to enliven proceedings in the afternoon- A grand concert will be ?iven by a company of come IS Xow Plymouth performers in the pvening. _ The whole of the proceeds are in aid of the Y.M.C A. for their work among our soldiers. Arrangements have been made whereby cars will meet the 11 50 a.m. train from Xcw Plymouth and the afternoon train from Inglewood.
