PERSONAL.
Mr Leighton, of New Plymouth, has received word that his eon, Rifleman Claude Leighton, who left with the 33rd Reinforcements, was killed in action on September 9th. Captain T- L Paget, who is on final leave r is spending a few deys in New Plymouth.
Mrs. S. Oliver, of Sentry Hill, has received advice that her son, Rifleman J. B. Oliver, is progressing favorably. Hospital not stated. Mr. L. Little, manager for Bellringef Bros., underwent an operation in the public hospital on Thursday, and is progressing favorably. Rifleman A. 3u. Sturmey, DGM., who was reported as wounded on Thursday, has his home is New Plymouth, not in Eltham, as stated. Mrs. A." Malone, of Riverlea, has received word that her son, Private "Jim" Malone, has had his right arm shattered by a shot in France. The secretary to the Public Service Commissioner (Mr. P. Verschaffelt) haa been granted exemption sine die from military service. The appeal was made by the Department. Mr. Arthur C St PauL of New Ply. mouth, has been appointed manager of th* New Zealand Farmers' Organisation Society's wool department at Wanganui as from the beginning of I next month.
Mrs. Espiner, formerly a resident of Eltham, Las received word that her Bon, Lance -Corporal P. J. Espiner, has been killed in action Amongst the wounded is a son of Mrs R. Hart, of Eltham (Rifleman A L. Sturmay, D.C.M.), alse, Lanee-CorporaJ 0 J. Ball and Private Harris.
Mr. G. Taylor (Hawera) has received word that his son, Gunner Hector B. Taylor, had been wounded on th* 14th September and admitted to hospital. Gunner Taylor left with tho 14th Reinforcement?, and has seen considerable fighting, having been in France ewe January, 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Pentelow, of Oaonui, have just received a cable informing them that their eldest son, Rifleman William Pentelow (a Lewis gunner), has received a gunshot wound (September 12) -in the left thigh, and has been taken to England. He left New Zealand with the 28th Reinforcements. His man-' friends in Eltham wll) bo pleased to; learn of the return of Private Wi A. Foster who left New Zealann m th« Medic*!! Corps with the Main Body faays the Argus). Private Poster also contradicts the" report of the death of Private W. Thomas, of Ngaere, who, he says, was looking quite ;wcll and fit long- since the date of tho receipt'of the report of his death.
