The following further donations have been made:—Amount previously acknowledged, £i>Bo; Keil Brown, J. O'Xeill E. B. Robertson, Wni. Jones, A. Bennett, W. Huzziff, J. Stockle.v. Walter Blair, Mat Phillips, .J. T. Walsh, R.' McK- Morison, W. Skedgwell, £-20 each: total, £1220. Some of the donors expressed a wish that half of the contribution should be paid to the town fund, and to this the committee agreed. Xuirterous donations of less than £-20 will be acknowledged later through the presi It was decided to promote special activity during the coming week towards the £2O effort, and thereafter to direct the committees' and canvassers' energies towards collecting smaller amounts.
MAHOE'S MASQUERADE BALL. Residents of Mahoe have every reason to feel satisfied with the results, financial and otherwise, of the masquerade ball held last night. Credit is due in a largo measure to Mrs. Bailey (secretary), whilst Mr. H. Mellow also deserves commendation for his efforts. The floor was in splendid order for dancing, and the M.O. (Mr. T. Davis) saw that all made the most of their opportunities on the crowded floor. The judge's verdict in the waltzing competition favored Miss Melvitle and Meharry (Kaponga, gold medals), with Miss Reid and J. Scoon (Eltham) second There was a great display of fancy dresses, the prizes being awarded as follows:—Miss R. Davies (Belgian girl) 1. Miss Foster (Union Jack) 2. Syd. Mellow scored a popular win for men in a costume, "Glaxo," T. 'Hoddinott (cowboy) being next. A cake, donated by Mrs. Bailer, netted ££> 12s and the doll. "Marjorie," realised 245. Miss Melville kindly donated her trophy (gold medal), and this was put up and realised £2 10s, whilst £1 was donated by Mr. McMahon. The results are in the neighborhood of £3l, which speaks well for the settlers of Mahoe.
[ GENERAL. The smoke concert promoted by the Jersey Breeders' Association was held in the Parish Hall last evening, the president (Mr. F. Ranford) presiding. During the evening an address was given by the president of the council (Mr. Deriner) on "Feeding Jersey Cattle," and he gave some valuable information on the care and treatment of cattle. The evening was passed very pleasantly, members and visitors all enjoying themselves. Several toasts were honored, whilst sones were contributed bv Frank and Tom Ranford, A- .T Smith. E. H. Linnell. and E. 5. W r alker. The Ranford brothers presided at the piano. A heartv vote of thank* was accorded Mr. Dcrmer for his address, and a similar compliment to the chair terminated the meeting. The Toko Road ladies had control of the Mart and Tea Rooms on Saturday the results bein?:—Shop £ll 10s 3d, Tea Rooms £fl )s 3d. A rather serious accident, occurred to Mrs. H B. Worthinaton, of Puniwhaku, yesterday. From what can be sathered. Mrs. Worthington was proceeding home, and when within t*wo miles of her home the horse canned trouble. The ladv was evidently thrown out of the gig. and mnst have been dra??ed a few yards, during which the wheels must have passed over her. Two small children were in the gig. but escaped without =erions injurv. Some time elapsed before Mrs. Worthington's predicament was noticed. She was then speedily removed to her home and Dr Steven summoned The latter lost no time m rendering medical attention, and an examination disclosed five ribs beine broken. Tnnuirv this afternoon elicited that Mrs. Worthington was making very good progress. Two soldiers—Privates Ford (Mnkahu) and Hodder (Wbangamomona) returned home last night, and were officially welcomed back by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan). Messrs G B Green. V. T. Bloxham. B. R Murrav, and O. Fowler were the Stratford representatives leaving for the 13 CI camp this morning. Intimation was received this morning that Rifleman Walter R. Mevenburc was killed in aelion in France on September 12. Prior to enlistin?.
