ON THE SEA.
A THRILLING STORY. SMALL VESSEL SINKS A SUBMARINE. Received Sept. 24, 7.20 p.m. London, Sept. 23. The Whitby (Yorkshire) Gazette tells a thrilling story. A submarine attacked a small merchantman, the crew of which served the steamer's gun until all except the steamer's gunner were hors de combat. The submarine ranged alongside, when the gunner hurled a bomb at her and sank the submarine. The latter's crew entered a collapsible boat and attempted to board the steamer but the gunner, with a second bomb, killed all but three, who swam to the steamer and were allowed to board, but were secured below deck. The vessel was towed to port.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. AMERICAN TRAWLER CAPTURED. Received Sept. 24, 7.30 pjn. New York, Sept. 23. The United States trawler Kingfisher was captured 500 miles off the coast by a. U-boat. It is suspected the crew were set adrift. —Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
