IRISH RED CROSS EFFORT.

BALLOT FOR THE SECTION. The ballot for the se<»ion given to the Irish Committee on behalf of the Red Cross funds took place 1 at the Soldiers' C!ul> last night Mr W. T Jennings explained to those present that the tickets had been issued in books of 100 each and numbered from 1 up to 2000 All the tickets had been sold, and a very careful record kept of the whole of the proceedings by the secretary (Mr. Kelleher). Yesterday morning the whole of the butts of the tickets were ngiin checked as they were plnced in the ballot-box in the presence of Messrs W. T. Jennings, M.P, J Bennett, Green, the Collector of Customs, and Sergeant Treahy (of the police), the latter sealing the 'box and taking charge of it till the drawing took place last night. The draw was made by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr W A. Collis), who acted on behalf of the Mayor, who had previously promised to .attends but had been called nway to Wellington, and in the presence of the above-named gentlemen. After thoroughly shaking up the tickets m the box. Mr. Collis drew the lucky number, which proved to be No 11 S3, and bore the name of Miss B. Kerr, Convent, NTow Plymouth. The announcement was received with applause. The final returns in connection with the effort show the gross receipts to have been £G42 15s The committee desire to specially thank Miss McCarthy for her work as secretary of the General Committee and Mr. W. P Kelleher, who acted as secretary in connection with the raffle of the section of land nt Tukapa Road. In connection with yesterday's report of the effort, a typographical error occurred in printing the names of some, of the helpers. It was Mrs. James Hawkins who was assisting, end Mr. James Hawkins, of the Imperial Hotel, who gave, the section of land to the committee.
