DISTRICT NEWS.

! ! YORK ROAD. j (From Our Own Correspondent.) The fancy dress dance held in the school proved a great success. The ! dresses were most beautiful, Miss Hilda Eithsteadt taking first prize, fulfilling to perfection her pari as a Spanish dancing girl, while Miss Hayes dressed a; ''bridge" took second prize- Mr C. Volzke was first in the gent's as "sailor," and Mr Hayes second as "Steele Rudd." Dancing was kept going tin early morn. The euchre party and dance held on the 13th proved a great success, Miss' Neustroski winning the ladies' prize, and A. Dodunski the gent's prize. Mrs Walsh supplied the music in her usual first class style, and the ladies supplied a splendid supper. The ladies are running a hard-up social towards the end of the month, and by the way they are working it should be an unqualified success. One sees many reports about cows being poor and feed being scarce, but I am pleased to say it does not apply to this road, as most cows are in very failcondition and still turnips and hay may be seen. I regret to report that Mrs Balsom, our school teacher, received word that her brother-in-law, Pte. W. Balsom had died of wounds in France. PUKEARUHE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Quite a gloom was cast over the district when the news came through that Private H. R. (Bob) Waterson had been killed in action in France, he being the second son of Mr and Mrs George Waterson to give his life for 'his country. Mr A. R. Davis has also received advice that his son, Corporal W. J. Davis, lias been wounded and removed to a hospital in England. Corpl.
