Gordgo, died at the front on January 2i, I!>l,s' lies received from the chaplain of the hospital in which he died (the Rev. R. S. Watson) a letter, in reply to inquiries made in reference to the death of his brother, in which the chaplain states the news of the death of Lance-Corporal Gordge as a great shock to him and to the others with whom he had been associated. Inter alia, the chaplain says:—"l used x o see a lot of him, and found him very conscientious and obliging—a real hard worker. .1 last saw him on the morning of June 23, when we went up by a light"railway with rations. Ho was looking after HQ. rations. The train broke down, and your brother and I walked the distance. . , When he got to the H.Q., the colonel told him he could have leave then, or become a quartermaster-sergeant and wait a week to get into the run of his job. . . He took the promotion, and. was to go on leave in a week's time. His promotion would have gone through that Jay, hut he was sent away sick. In the afternoon he was picked up unconscious, having almost reached camp on his return He collapsed near a field ambulance, and received immediate attention He was taken to hospital, and died the following clay. I asked the doctor if he thought he would not have been taken ill if he had had leave sooner, but he said 'No.' ... He was a fine chap, and always did his best, and I trust this thought and the Christian hope may help you in your sorrow."
