THE HIGH SCHOOL.

DEPUTATIONS JCO MINISTERS. ; The Citizens' Committee that has in band the raising of funds to increase the accommodation of the New Plymouth High School now being constructed took advantage of the presence in town of the Acting-Prpmier and the Hon. D- H. Guthtfe to lay before them the position of affaire and to again ask the Government to contributo a £ for £ subsidy on tho amounts privately subscribed. It was pointed out by Messrs James M'lcod, A. 11. Johnstone, and T. C. List, of the Ctizns' Committee, that £BOOO had aready been subscribed, and that it was expected to raise another £BOO, which would defray the cost of the assembly hall and the western wings, which were now in hand, but that, in order to proride for the present needs of the school —and not to anticipate the requirements of the immediate future —the other class rooms cut out of the original plans by tho Department in the interests of Bhort-siglited economy, would need to be reinstated- A gymnasium was a necessary, adjunct to the school, and provision for furnishing and sanitation were also necessary. A pound for pound subsidy would enable this work to be canned out and the sehool'be made complete. Sir .Tames Allen, in his reply, said, as late Minister of Education, he was considerably interested in the progress and success of the "New Plymouth School, and as Minister of Finance he also was | aware of the splendid work the scholars had done on, the shooting range and athletic field. He congratulated the pro vince and the school on the excellent results attained.

On the suggestion of the Minister, it was decided to visit the school building on the following morning, which was done, the principal (Mr. W. 11. Moyes), the chairman of the High School Board CMr. T). Hutchen), members of the board as v/ell as of the Citizens' Committee being present. The Ministers inspected the school building now under construction and had explained to them • what was needed to complete the building. After inspecting the boarding esfablishme'it and discussing the matter further, Sir James Allen asked Mr. P. J. H. White (chairman of the Citizens' .Committee) to furnish complete particulars of what was being done by the citizens (whom he commended for their public spirit) and nil other information 'bcarins upon the subject, and stated that the request for the additional financial asistance would be reconsidered.
