ELTHAM COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Eltham County Council held the usual meeting on Saturday. Present: Crs. C. J. Belcher, *A. Campbell, A. V. Messcna, W. M. Barker, A, McWilliam, A. C. Pease, C. E. McGuinness, E. J. Gifford, and W. Hardwick Smith. CORRESPONDENCE. Alexander Boddie, Mangamingi, desired the council to attend to Wingrove road creek.—Notice to be forwarded to occupier of land to have creek cleared. Egmont County Council forwarded letter from A. Affleck, junr., complaining of the state of the northern portion of the Auroa, Road. The Egmont Council suggested that the extra 10 per cent, on the previous loans be expended on this portion of the road.—Egmont Council to be advised that the Eltham Council preferred a, joint loan being raised to have the road attended to. James Shallue, Rawhitiroa, applied for six yards of broken shell rock from the Hu Road. —Declined. F. H. Peters, Mountain Road, applied to have culvert at Stuart Road lowered. —Neighbor to be instructed to clear the creek and the top to be lowered three feet. The Minister for Public Works forwarded circular letter that payments for wages for contracts on which subsidies had to be paid should be referred to the Public Works Engineer for approval when accepting tenders. —Received. WATER POWER. Stratford Borough Council wrote in reference to the formation of the proposed Taranald Hydro-Electric League. They desired that the Government be urged of the necessity for early and vigorous action in connection with the proposed hydro-electric scheme for the North Island, and particularly the desire that Taranaki be linked up with the scheme at the earliest possible opportunity. They also invited the Eltham Council to attend a conference at Stratford on October 17 at 2.30 p.m. In reply to Cr. McWilliam, the chair-' man remarked that they could supply the whole of the North island. -, Cr. McWilliam said the Lake Coleridge scheme was benefiting Canterbury, and the same thing here would mean a lot to Taranaki. The chairman said he believed the power would come from Lake Waikaremoana and the Waikato river. Councillors were agreed that the scheme, should be supported, and elected the chairman and Cr. Campbell to represent the county at the conference. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The report of the engineer (Mr. W. D. Tosswill) on work done during the month, and on various matters within his province, was adopted. SCARCITY OF LABOR. The chairman said they were up against work in the shortage of labor. Tenders had been called for earth-work, but none received. Other urgent work was being held up. It was decided to call tenders for 1000 yards of shell rock. Cr. McWilliam said he thought the settlers might be called upon to lend a hand. He himself had put iu two days on a bank near his home. He agreed it was not practicable or desirable to get the central gang out at the back. The chairman: Give me a lead what to do. Two workmen finished up last night, and they were being paid 14s a jlay working in the river. RANGER'S REPORT. Mr. V. Thompson submitted a lengthy report on the month's work, and mentioned amongst other things that the names of a number of cyclists and motorcyclists had been taken for riding without lights.—lt was resolved to prosecute in these particular instances. . COUNTY CLERK. There were 102 applications received for the county clerkship, and the decision was not available when these lines were penned.
