The scheme o£ furlough lor long-servic men now in tlie Xew Zealand Expedi tionarv Force has 'been operating fo pome time, and has already brought man; Main Body men to the Dominion. Th statements made by the Minister of De fence indicate that it is to be develops to pome extent,' but, as the Ministe points out, the crux of the question i shipping It Is necessary to provide firs for the returning sick and wounded, am the Defence Department has to guar against interfering with the despatch o reinforcements from this end. The Minister has not mentioned figure in connection with the furlough sehem< The Defenct. authorities, it is under r-tood, consider that it would be imprat ticable to bring hack on furlough mor than 100 men a month, even under th most favorable conditions- It woul take a very long time at that rate t provide for all the men who have ha more than throe years' service. If th system involved an absence from Franc of six months, the granting of furlong to 100 men per month would mean witt in a few months the withdrawal of 60 experieneeed men from the division.
