SOCIETY NEWS. V. I NEW PLYMOUTH. Evening Party.—Last Tuesday evening, Mrs. J. E-berlet gave a very enjoyable party aa a farewell to Nurse Gill, who is leaving shortly for the front. The winners of the competitions were Miss B. Evans and Miss Rata Whitton. Amongst those present were: Mrs Phankueh, Misses Roy, Whitton (21. Gill, Bedford (2), Laing. C. Morey, D. Bradbury, and W. Bradbury. , Sale of Work.—Last Wenesday, at Niger House, a most successful sale of work was held in aid of the Irish Red Cross Saturday, tho credit of which being mainlv due to Miss Branley. Mrs. K. A. Walker, president of the New Plymouth Red Cross Society, made an appropriate opening speech. The following ladies supervised the following stalls:—Sweet stall, Miss Branley; fancy stall, Misses Casev and Lean (Wellington): plain work stall. Mm. and Miss Bates: Christmas free, Miss Mead; flower stall, Miss Williams: afternoon tea, Misses Pearce and M. Branley. During the afternoon, musical items were given by Misses Bennett (2). Biuemen, Hurley, B. Allen, Pearson, nnd Bates.
The competitions were won by the following ladies:—Mrs. M'Kean. Mrs. Dav. Miss Longstaff, Miss J. Branlev (who kindly Tctunied the prize to the Red Cross- Committee): Mesdames Nolan and Bates drew for the Red Cross eakp, which finally resulted in Mr.'. Bates winning the lucky \ number. Amongst those present were: Mesdames' Hooper. M'Kean, Gray (Stratford), Ridd. Bttllot. Chnules. Nolan. Honeyfield, and Misses Humphries (21, Munro ("21, Martin (2). Longstaff. and Hurlev (2). Amongst the visitors staying at Chat3worth House this week were:— Mrs- Haycraft and Miss Nairn (Paltnerston North), Mrs. Townsend (Waitara), Miss Hickey (Opunake). Miss D. Simpson, who has been on a ?hort visit to Eltham. has returned.
Mrs. F. Mackay (Stratford) and Miss Frame (Christehurch). who have been the guests of Mrs. J, Mackay (Fitzrov), have returned to their respective homes. Kitchen Tea.—Last Tuesday. Mrs. Chancy gave a very enjoyable kitchen tea in honor of Miss Keitha Leatham. The guessing competition was won by Miss Winfield. Mrs- Chaney received her guests in a black chiffon taffetas, with cream silk and lace blouse; Miss K. Leatham wore a very pretty navy blue crepe de chine, with ninon sleeves, relieved with cream crepe collar embroideml in pink, black silk hat piped with pink. Amongst those nresent were: Mrs. T. Robertson. Mrs. B. Chaney, Mioses Crooke (2). Rewind, Armstrong. Webster. Outfield (2). M. Thomson, Wade, Leatham (2). Bedford. Lenrton.. Winfield, Collins. Blundell. Flower Show.—St. Mary's Hall presented a verv beautiful efTect on Thursday last, it being the .occasion of the annual spring show, and it was with difTicnJfv that lovers of flowers could tear themselves away from the exnnisitc arrav of fcvooms.
