Through the simple process of toastnig tlieir tobacco the manufacturers of Gold Pouch and Three Diamonds have arge y added to the popularity of these brands It i a a well-known fact that cooKed food is wholesomer and more digestible than raw food and the same principle applies to tobacco. We do not eat raw meat or fish, or drink raw coflee, why should we smoke raw tobacco? It is wonderful how the flavor of tobacco can be developed by toasting Try the new toasted Gold Pouch or Three Diamonds and you will notice a marked improvement, and what is also important, as a result of the toasting, the tobacco loses all deleterious properties. At Patea on Saturday the local rifle club defeated Hawera by 709 to 699. In connection with recent teats madeat the Taranaki ironsand works, it is reported that highly encouraging resultsare being obtained. A high grade of' grey pig-iron is being produced of uniform quality, and the furnace is working quite satisfactorily. Grey iron was produced at the trials last year, but there was mottled iron and hard white iron as well. Under Mr. Aubel's direction the furnace has been largely reconstructed and a hot blast installed. Some changes in the preparation plant have also been made, and the erratic and varying nature of the product has been overcome. The preparation plant is still capable of considerable improvement and the handling of the metal when tapping takes place might be better, and will be as the men become more accustomed to the work. Unfortunately through lack of coal and coke the furnace cannot be kept in operation this week, but the result of eight or ten days' work will be the production of a large quantity of commercial foundry iron. , The question of the speed of motor traffic in Devon. Street was mentioned at last night's meeting of the Borough Council by Cr. Griffiths, who said he thought something ought to be done to check the nuisance. He said the matter was the subject of comment by visitors to the town, and there were daily narrow escapes from accidents on account of the reckless manner in which cars and bicycles were driven through the town. Cr. Collis referred to the practice of turning round the corners of streets on the wrong Bide. The Mayor said one of the streets in which such offences were very prevalent was St. Aubyn Street, and at the turning into Currie Street. The inspector intimated that several cases for breaches of the by-laws in the direction mentioned were awaiting hearing, and added that further efforts would be made to bring offenders to book. Our readers are reminded that the Melbourne, Ltd.'s, historic sale has only a few more days to run.
