HAWERA SITTINGS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The First Wellington Military Service Board continued its sittings at Hawera yesterday. Edward Frank Hollands, electrical engineer, Stratford. Adjourned appeal. Councillor Hunter, of the Stratford Borough Council, appeared in support of the appeal, and deposed that the counj cil's electrical plant was in such a condition that it required an expert electrical engineer to manage the worksj Twelve months ago they advertised for ! an electrical engineer and received over GO applicants, but none suitable for the position. The board: You come before us and aslc for exemption or extension of leave, and yet you have never taken any steps to replace Hollands. —Adjourned until October sitting. Charles Crosby, share-milker, Normanby (adjourned appeal). —Decision reserved. Samuel Thompson, dairy fanner, Stratford, appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant held a leasehold farm of 59 acres. For some time he worked the farm alone, but he now had a share-milker with himHe milked 23 cows with machines. He also ran a manure manufacturing works. He did the whole .of the work himself. He had advertised" for a man to take over the works, but had received no applications. —Adjourned until next sitting. Herbert George Blackman, baker, Hawera, appealed on the ground of public interest.—Adjourned until October sitting. Sergeant George A. Carter, Stratford. Application for leave from active service. The made by his mother, who deposed that her son left Sew Zealand on April 7, Bio — l The 'board stated that all men who had served over three year* on active servico would be granted leave by the authorities if application was majle to them.—The application was withdrawn. Albert Victor Moss, sheep farmer, Kohuratahi, appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant held a farm of sft3 acres, bush country.—Decision reserved sine die. He was a married man, with two children, and as his wife was in delicate health she was unable to assist oil the, farm. He had four brothers, two at the front and another was going into camp in September and had not appealed. James Douglas Fairweather, dairy farmer, Patea (adjourned from July 31). — Leave granted until October draft. Decision was reserved sine die in the following cases:— Frank Keilson, sheep farmer, Whangamoiuona; Leslie Ayere, farmer, Matau; George Alfred Swanger, shtep farmer, Pohokura. Thomas Edward Traske, sheep farmer, Kolniratahi, appealed on the grounds of public interest, and undue hardship. Appellant's farm comprised "200 acres. He had not yet been able to make arrangements for someone to look after his farm while away. To Major Cox: He had endeavored to sell the farm, but had not succeeded. He had two brothers, one a police constable and the other a returned soldier who had very little experience in fanning.—Decision reserved. Albert Victor Oorkill, dairy farmer, Awatuna. Appellant had a farm of 102 acres and milked 28 cows by hand. His wife assisted. He asked for extension o£ leave until the end of May. To Ma jor Cox: He went on to the farm 12 months ago, and the lease had four years to run.—Adjourned until October. Tile board added that they were of opinion that appellant had no right to take Vp liis farm during the last 13 months. He must arrange to get someone to help his wife to run the farm. They were also of the opinion that he must go, George C. Hill, farmer, Rowan (adjourned from "July 31).—Decision reserved. Charles Everherd C'ossey, motor-lorry driver. TCltham, appealed on the grounds of pnbiic interest and undue hardship. Mr. L. Bunn deposed that appellant was employed by him as a motor driver. He had not yet tried to get a man to replace Cossey. To Major Cox: He had not advertised for a man.—Decision reserved. Victor Richard Reeve, contractor, Eltham, whose ijnpeal was heard on Thursday and decision reserved, was adjourned sine die. Ernest Edwar Cresswell, farmer, Mangatoki, appealed on the grounds of public interest, and undue hardship- Appellant leased a farm of 187 acres, and the lease had two years to run. He milked 51 cows with machines. —Decision adjourned sine die. Ernest Walter Gibbons, farmer, Kaupokonui (adjourned from last sitting).— Appeal dismissed. Algernon Carlyle Gower, sheep farmer, Omoana.- —Adjourned sine die, the board adding their congratulations for the patriotic and loyal spirit exhibited by the family. Frederick Isaac Hughes, dairy farmer, Auroa, appealed on grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant leased a farm of 80% acres and milked 43 cows by machines.—Adjourned sine die. Decision was adjourned sine die in the cases of Timothy Huxley, farmer, Whenuakura, and Herbert George Hall, dairy farmer, Matapu. The adjourned appeal of John Thomas Eeardon, farmer, Mahoe, was further reviewed and decision adjourned sine die. Frank Fletcher Barraclough, butcher, Hawera, appealed on the grounds of pufoI lie interest and undue hardship. Appellant deposed that he was manager of a business in Hawera- There were hands employed in the shop ,all married inen- He had one brother at the front. There were none of the employees who would be capable of talking over the management To Major Cox: He did not think that his father was capable of conducting,the inside management. His brother left Xew Zealand about a month ago.—Decision reserved. Frederick Hammond, coachbuilder Opunake, was granted an extension of time until the October draft. Harrv F. Catchpole, Mokoia, was arantcd until the October draft.
