Stratford, August 30. It will be remembered tliat at a previous aittiug of the Magistrate s Court, before Mr. W. R- Haselden, S.M., Tliomaa Waite, farmer, sued J. \V. -Boon, contractor, for damages sustained by a car driven by plaintiff colliding with some timber projecting well out into the road. Mr. Haselden nonsuited plaintiff on the ground that defendant was merely supervising the work. This afternoon the ease was he-heard, ' Messrs Masters, Ltd., and Fawcett (carrier) being linked with Boon as defendants. Mr. Johnstone repesented Fawcett, Mr. S. Spence for J. W. Boon, and Mr. T. C. Fookes for Masters, Ltd. Mr- Johnstone opened the case on similar lines to those at the first hearing, plaintiff giving evidence as before. C. H. Bridger, motor mechanic, also gave evidence. (Left sitting.)' ST. MARY'S SCHOOL. " Yeesterday afternoon a sale of work was held in the Parish Hall to raise funds to provide an asphalt setting to the tennis and basket-ball grounds. The 40 odd pupils and friends made a very creditable display with their work, whicu filled ma ny stalls. The opening addresses were made by the Rev. C. W. Howard and Mrs. J. B. Hine, after which the fair stallholders got to work, and, receiving good support from church adherents, the financial results should prove verv satisfactory. Those assisting in the stalls were: Goods —Misses Fleming, M. Porritt, L. Hill; sweets—Misses Rogers, J- Alexander, G. Death, K. Grant; produce—Misses Hunt, N. Wickstead, E. Mounsey, M. Harrison, M. Johnston; flowers—Misses M. Young, M. Bindon: surprise packets—Miss Darling and junior pupils; tea rooms —Misses Calliphronas, M. Besley, J. Alexander, P. Wickstead, E. Buist, D. Riddel], and MBell. Mention should also be made of the neat acting of a juvenile troupe of I scholars in a fairy play, "The Golden Goose," the children being coached by Miss Fleming. • GENERAL. Twenty-seven pounds ten shillings was taken at the gates and grandstand at the football match on Thursday. The presence of the Town Band added much to the pleasure of patrons. The thanks of the press representatives are due to Mr. J. H. Thompson for providing tables and seats t<7 allow the reporting to be done with comfort. j Stratford Card Club held a dance last night, and players mustered very strongly, 86 players being engaged. Competition was very keen, prize* being won as follow:—Miss G. Mountford, half-ton coal presented by Bendall Bros.; Mrs. E. Jones, quarter-ton coal (J. D. Sharrock); Mts.W. Crofts, 501b flour (Masters, Ltd.); Mr. C. Middlemiss, safety razor (S. Sharp); C. Fowler, pipe (C. E. James) The Mayor also presented Mr. J. Jones (captain) with the shield won ',<y the Stratford Club in the recent tournament, whilst the secretary (Mr. R. H. Kivell) was presented with a case of pipes for his work in connection with the. tournaments during the winter. The floor was in excellent order for the dance, the music for which was supplied by Mrs. Bianchi and Messrs Parker and Rowe. One pounds fifteen shillings was collected in the room for the Copper Trail. The Kaponga Hall whs well filled on Thursday evening, when a dance was held by the Football Club. The takings j amounted to £2O, and, after meeting ex- | pcnsP3, the balance will go to the Red > Cross funds The medal donated by Mr. Malone for the best tackier in the Kaponga team was awarded to Sounness. A waltzing competition attracted great

interest, the winners being Mis,. T. j iiughes and Mr. L. Jurd. Mrs. S. UT. Porritt has donated 10s towards the Christmas Parcels Fund. The Patriotic Tea Rooms will be controlled to-morrow 'by the Salvation Army and the Shop by Mcsdames Iteira and 'Hawkins. Donations ol' cakes, sweets, produce, etc., will all be acceptable. The executive of the A. and P. Association met last evening, when there were present: Messrs J. W. Boon (president), Lopdell, Pettigrew, M'Millau, Huggett, and Harrison. Mr- R. Dingle forwarded uu apology. Mr. Silk was Appointed chairman of side-shows committee, and Mrs. O. Curtis will have control of the ice cream stall- Messrs P. L. Goodwin, L. 15. Smith (Waijjuku), J. Penny (Warwick Road), and W. R. Hawke (Stratford) were elected membersA social was held in the Wliangamomono. Hall this week, when the Sunday School and Bible class students presented Mr. P. M. Long, who is leaving for Rotorua. with a gentleman's companion and strop. The resident missionary Mr. A. H. Korrie) and Mr. T. .Taylor spoke in appreciative words of Mr. Long's work in this respect, and Mr. Bovis referred to the Medical Association, Patriotic and Citizens' Committees' work, and all wished their guest the best of prosperity in his new home. Mr. Long suitably acknowledged the gift and remarks.
