THE EMPIRE. LAST NIGHT OF VIOLA ©ANA IN "THE WINDING TRAIL." Viola Dana, the "brilliant little Rtar of tlis Metro wonder-play, "The Winding Trail," has been appearing before the public ever since she can remember, and that is not so mp.ny years back, as Miss Dana is one of the youngest legitimate stars in filmdom. Her first public appearance was as a solo dancer at the age of live years, and after her debut she was in constant demand as a dancer, and appeared in fancy and toe dances before distinguished audiences. Miss Dana's first picture was in the shape of an experiment, but it proved a tremendous success, and Miss Dana has attained bar greatest successes with Metro. Her last nieture. "Blue Tonus." has been acclaimed by critics one of the biggest and most appealing pictures ever made, and "The Winding Trail" runs it verv close. It is a pleasure to watch Miss Dana in this gripping picture, which concludes a sue-' cestui three-nights season at the Empire to-night. MATKTEE THIS AFTERNOON. TJio matinee programme for this afternoon will be headed-by Charlie Chaplin in ".Behind the Screen." RUPERT HUGHES' EEMAfRKABLE NOVEL, "EMPTY POQKETS." 'Empty Pockets," the star feature- to be screened at the Empire Theatre on Monday, is a film version of the novel by Rupert Hughes. The picture is a first National release, and the cast is an allstar one. including Barbara Castleton, Bert Lytell, and Malcolm Williams. The last-named takes the role of Perry Merethow, a millionaire about town, who has a special weakness for girls with coppercolored hair. He is found murdered on the roof of a tenement house, and five women, all with red hair, are implicated because, in the dead man's hand, is found a knot of hair of that color. The plot is said to retain a remarkable clarity in spite of amazing complications, and all sorts of cross currents which go to increase the mystification. The ending, it is claimed, is very dramatic and unexpected. EVERYBODY'S. MADGE EVANS, IN "GATES OF GLADNESS. A little child shall lead them, is the theme is this sweet film story, and it certainly proves the truth and wisdom of those wonderful words. Delightful Madge Evans plays the part of the little daughter whose childish'innocence . and artlessness help to mould the fortunes of ! many people, and this "kiddie star" is as fascinating in this screen as in any of the others which have made her name world-famous. The thirteenth episode of "The Negleteed Wife" and a Pathe Gazette are also included on this programme, which shows to-day and tonight at Everybody's. 1
