MOTUNOI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday last, in the local school l room, was held a very enjoyable little function, in the shape of a concert and fjance, in aid of school improvement funds. Judging by the crowded state of the room, it is obvious that the settlers 'badly need, a hall in which to hold such gatherings. The programme was prepared by Mrs. Read (the head teacher), who spent no little time and care in seeing that everything was ready for the enjoyment of patrons. Many travelled from other parts to assist—viz., Misses Zoe Shcanl (Uromii), Hone (Waverley) —while Messrs. Fox, Wardell and Martin also contributed. The children gave a group song, also two farces, which were well applauded. Little Miss Hannah Edwin sang prettily and pathetically, "Please Give Me a Penny," and pennies sTie got—somewhere about three hundred. Supper was provided, and an enjoyable dance followed. Sweets were sold by the children, while a cushion was guessed for The result of the evening is that the children are to have a bicycle, saddle and garden tool shed—a convenience badly needed by ,i roll of eighty odd children, who in the past have sheltered their motor bikes, etc., in the sheds provided, to the exclusion of the children themselves, who, like the "Arab and his tent," have been "pushed out." WHAREROA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening last another Euchre party, followed by a dance, was held at Whareroa, when there was again a large gathering. Prizes ,were won by Miss Patterson (Ist), Miss Malcolm (2nd), and Mrs. B. Bloor (booby). For the men, Mr. W. Harrison gained Ist, Mr D. Grant 2nd and Mr. S. Hunt booby. The remainder of the time was pleasantly passed in dancing, Mr. B. Bloor proving a lirst-class M.C., While the music was supplied by Mrs. Benton and Messrs Murphy and Leatham. The Whareroa ladies provided an excellent supper. On Friday evening the last dancing class for children was held, when there was a good attendance. Next Friday evening (30th) a wind-up long-night dance is to be held, when u large crowd is expected.
