RUGBY—THE. GRAMMAS. SCHOOL BOYS—PATRIOTIC OBJECTS.

To tie Editor. Sir,—May I 'offer a suggestion? As a spectator at the match on Saturday,. I wish, to state that, as an afternoon's '■pleasure, I have seldom witnessed anything surpassing- the manly and clever (exhibition of Rugby as that, played :against the High School boj's. First of all, let it he understood that whilst my purpose in'writing is essentially to praise the lads from the north,.l quite recognise the merits of the local team- but, might it not be possible that th» High School have had just a little too much taken- out of them—i.e., had tho-match been played earlier in the season the lo'cnl boys "would hawdisplayed morcvigorf To be plain, •was it' not patent that they "were a trifle-stale? I'havo- admired their play dwingthe-.season.and the conclusion armed at' was that they were a fine- team wlien "really well." Auckland Grammar School; boy® have well' earned theirrep-u----tation-;: it "was well enough known that they would' give the local lad's a huge taslfr the resist of the match abundantly !beaxa out tho good" opinions held of the team. That they had been co-ashed 1 by an expert' was evidient'; lUfet "these lads have, barkened to-their mentor-was plainly to> 'be seen,.for theii-combination'-was admirable;- and that, all through the game, they showed manliness and the true spirit of Rugby everyone who witnessed the game- will cheerfully acknowledge. T!>r-y were just a trifle too swift for our boys.

My suggestion:. I have seeiivßugby in alt' its phases, plilyed by first-class teams; I have not seen- a more excellent display than the Grammar School toys gave on> Saturday. We war.fr money for .patriotic purposes. Con! d' not the authorities arrange to tour tjiese-lads right 'through the Dominion ? The Government surely wonldr extend* travelling^rivileges; tlie people in the various centres would be glad to billet the bovs: and'mark you, thero are many men in the community who do not contribute one panny piece through tho different patriotic movements- who would willingly put their hands' deep into their pockets and draw forth the-welcome shilling to watch these lads at play, and thus assist in augmenting the- funds of the worthy organisations which are doing' such noble work in the course of amelioration of and assistance towards the heroes who are fighting I humanity's battles. —1 am, etc.. SOKTHERN'JER. . August 80.
