Tt is reported that there is a considerable slump in all classes of stock in the Waikato 'just now. Several motor cars have been taken from the streets of Auckland lately by young men for the purpose of indulging in joy rides. A car appropriated by two men the other evening got out of control, with the result that it swerved against the kerbing and upset. The occupants apparently were unhurt, as i they were seen to rim oft", and disappear before they could he recognised. The car was considerably damaged, and had' to be towed away for repairs. The following anecdote about the late Father Dore is related by an Auckland soldier, who served on Gallipoli, in a letter to his mother:—On one occasion, when most of the New Zealand officers at a certain point had been put out of action, Father Dore, who was standing close by, picked up one of the rifles and went into action and fought fearlessly. Some days at!lerwards, one of the men said to him: ''Father, why don't you remain in the ranks and lead us?" "No," Father Dore replied, "I cannot, my blood was up then, and I was an Irishman, but now I am a priest." A peculiar epidemic seems to have broken out amongst draught horses on some of the farms in the King Country. On one farm inland from Te Kuiti three fine horses died one after the other, and others are ill. At first the symptoms seemed to point to influenza, and treatment was given aecordingtv,, but when experienced men were,.'called in tliey seemed qufte at :a loss fo understand the nature of the, disease. " In that particular locality nothing similar has ever occurred before, and this.makes it all the more difficult to find a solution for a trouble which may cause serious loss to horseowners.
