A man named Mitchell was killed at Denniston mine on Tuesday. He was* removing his coat from a nail on thetimber prop when a fall of coal came down and broke his neck.

All Westport district mines were idle-to-day, at Denniston owing to the fatal accident and funeral, at Millerton owing' to shortage of coal trucks, and at Stockton owing to trouble \regarding the discharge of deputy Snow. This morning tho snow was lower on the ranges than for many years. It •was intensely cold: but beautifully, fine,, clear and frosty.

EDUCATIONAL. CO-ORDINATION". Christchurch,. August ML The Education Conference has resumed its sittings. Mr A. G. Aschman, on behalf of tho National Institute, moved that provision !he made for the closer co-ordination in curricula and methods of instruction of the primary, secondary and technical departments of the education svstem.

Mr , Caughley, Assistant-Director of Education, remarked that co-ordination wa s being forced upon the primary and secondary schools, but technical education had not yet quite found itself. It must be considered in the education 'scheme as a whole, because it was a very . valuable* section.

After a good discussion the motion was, carried unanimously. ;

SUPERANUATION REGULATIONS Wellington, August 16.
