JHE SITUATION EXPLAINED. enemy. strengthening Western line. 4HSAEPEARAXCE 01 GERMAN BESEBVES. IVENTS MOVING RAHDLT IN RUSSIA. Received August 16, 8.15 pjs
London, August 18. there is no present indication of the Germans retiring behind the Somme. Tki enemy has made & further retirentfltt on the north-eastern part of the Lj» salient from a mile to two miles ovtr a nine-mile front.' He is also wubditwing from the Serre salient and straightening ont the bulge there. The impression is increasing that the enemy intends to abandon the offen-
site. The Germans have been eomnetted to use divisions of reserves between Jhe Oise and the Ancre, and now .oily has on the whole West front 16 fresh divisions in reserve, of which 11 fctlmig to Prince Rupprecht. The latt* only holds the line from the sea to *J* Albert front, from Albert to Soiseoarb held% General von Boehm. It is believed the latter was selected because he did well on the Somme battlefield m 1016. In view that they have Only 16 fresh divisions, it is doubtful wihether'the Germans will pat up another big attack this year. A German attack on tie Murman railway will probably be made in September. The enemy is preparing to advance from all the Finnish railheads. Tli Bolsheviks, who retired before our fore**, perpetrated every form of atrocity On the inhabitants. Oar force landed at Onega Bay, and trie! to cat off the Bolsheviks from Aistlacd, bat the latter reached Obeßerskaj*, 100 miles southward, and held up our force, which inflicted heavy enemy loss** They made fairly good resistance', being apparently under German aflfettf.
Heeeived August 16, 8.46 p.m. London, Augiot 15. Th* position of the rest of Russia is very obseure. There is no official information about Lenin and' Trotsky. Thtw is a disquieting, though uneonfklMd, report that the Bolsheviks inflicted a severe defeat on the ucens at Satftara. There is gome hope that General AletfefTs and General Nenekin's force* south of the Volga may join nands and relieve thetn. W* have now got a considerable force north-west of Persia, which met with little opposition, excejit from the Jancxli tribesmen, who are leagued to the Bolsheviks. We reached the Caspian. Tb» British detachment went from EntetU by sea, and reached Baku and took aver a part of the defence of the town. The whole Allied force there of WOO hold the line west of the town. The Turkish force is 10,000, of which 7000 are regulars. Neither side has manr gun*. General Dokouohieff commands the Alied forces. We cannot depend on holding Baku, but the object i« to prevent enemy penetration towards Afghanistan.—Aus.-N\2. Cable Assoc.
