«a» (From' 1 Our Own-Correspondent.) August 14. Much- interest' was taken in the Salvation Army Band Sunday and Musical Festival last Sunday and again on Tuesday evening in the Army Barracks. There were excellent attendances on (both occasions, and as a result it is anticipated that about £4O will be secured and placed to tho fund now being raised to secure new silverplated instruments. Owing to enlistments and other causes tie Town Band had temporarily disbanded, but the Salvationists had nobly fiiled the "breach- and assisted at several public functions with distinct credit to themselves and also the town- With a playing strength of 22 members, Bandmaster I. J. Bridger has some very promising material under his control, and at the entertainment the band selectios, marches, etc., were all well received, thoroughly earning the applause showered on their efforts. Vocal items, doiets,. diologues, recitations, etc., made the entertainment very attractive, adding a varietv that appealed to all. The'C.E.MJS. Club (building is now well forward. The membership shows steady progress, and is beyond the 200 mark. When the new building is complete it will hold four ibilltaid tables, besides card rooms, etc. Tho club ia advertising, in the News, for a steward . At the School Committee meeting on Monday evening it was announced that the appeal by the chairman, Mr Bridger, had rcsultedMn £l4 14s 6d being collected. The ladies notified that the next euolvro tournament and dance would be the last for the season. MenAers spoke in appreciative terms of the work of tho-ladies in this direction, and it was .resolved to make arrangement?! to suitably entertain them.
